Standards in Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a primary care profession regulated by statute.

The title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law. Only those on the UK Statutory Register are entitled to practise as osteopaths.

The statutory regulator is the General Osteopathic Council. It was established under the Osteopaths Act 1993 and:

  • Registers qualified professionals
  • Sets, maintains, develops standards of osteopathic practice and conduct
  • Ensures quality of education and continuing professional development
  • Removes any practitioner who is unfit to practise from the register
  • Helps patients with concerns or complaints about osteopaths
